Southport, NC, used to be a sleepy little fishing village. In the 40's it was known for a hospitable USO to the men and women stationed at Ft. Caswell in the Navy and Marines or at the USCG Station. In the 50's the claim to fame was that it was ground zero for Hurrican Hazel. Everything in Southport is dated before or after Hazel. In the late 60's and early 70's Brown and Root came to town and built the Nuclear Plant. In the 80's the championship golf courses and gated communities began to be built and Southport became a mecca of golf. Southport is the home of the US Open King Mackeral tournament held the first weekend of October each year and the NC Fourth of July Festival (the oldest continuous Fourth of July celebration in NC). Orton Plantation sponsors daily tours in season as well as holding a camellia show annually. It was the setting for the movie Fire Starter as well as several other movies shot in the area. nearby is Brunswick Town State Historic Site which has a diorama, a film, a small museum of items found on site, Fort Anderson, and the remains of the houses and buildings of Brunswick Town which was the first settlement on the coast of NC.  It is only 30 minutes North to Wilmington, NC. There you will find movies, live theater, shopping, antiques, and many other ammenities. If you go South
down US 17 you will pass by Calabash, seafood capital of the world on your way to Myrtle Beach SC. It only takes 60 minutes to reach live entertainment at the Palace Theater, Alabama Theater, Broadway at the Beach, the Mall of SC, Dolly Parton's theater, and more.
It is only a 30 minute ferry ride to BALD HEAD ISLAND, playground of the rich and famous. While you are there, visit OLD BALDY the original lighthouse of the Cape Fear that warned sailors of the treacherous shoals. Spend the night at the Inn, walk on the pristine beach, play golf on the championship course, eat at the restaurants, take the tour on a golf cart. Then take the ferry back to Southport.
Take a drive out NC 211 to the shooting range (Ye OLDE GUN CLUB). It is on the right just across from St. James. The second bridge to Oak Island is just a bit further down the highway, across from Midway Road (and Worms and Coffee). It should open sometime in 2010. Take a left at the stoplight at the intersection of 211/133 and venture across the Inland Waterway to Oak Island. It is a family beach that was developed after Hurrican Hazel devastated it in 1954. Here you will find seafood restaurants, carpet golf, shops, tourist oriented stores, ice cream shops, coffee shops, and more.
There is lots to do in the area. Start at Woodside Trailer Park.
